“There will be no new players of significance to enter the business. Investors don’t want to entertain the remotest possibility of funding any start-up that deals with music, no matter how clever and innovative. As one major media venture firm told me a few months ago, they’re tired of writing cheques for big advances to record labels.”
I disagree. While it is true that most investors don’t want to deal with music startups, that alone doesn’t kill innovation. There will be people who will not be stopped by the lack of funding, complex challenges, and uncertainty. There are simply too many people who love music for that to really happen.
If Wayne is really talking about a pending lack of bloated, soul-less music apps, then that’s something I am not going to miss much. :)
Totally with Anthony on this one. Innovation in this space doesn’t require big budgets, just shrewd business sense, an understanding of technology, and a love of music.
In other news, September was 8tracks first month of profitability. No Series A, no big venture firms, no office space. Now we’re working with progressive labels to help realize their artist’s creative ideas.

I agree. 8tracks was built by people who love music and those who desire to share it. You can’t kill that.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I think that reliance on VCs is something that really has more to do with the culture of the last fifteen years than anything else. I don’t think that lack of VC funding will be any impediment to innovation.
