Hey Syd! Thanks for taking some time to check out 8tracks.
The shuffling thing is a bitch, I agree, but that’s part of the compulsory small webcaster license. We’re talking to congressmen about trying to get that kind of thing sorted out. DMCA is a tricky beast.
The annoying duplicates is a problem, agreed, which will hopefully be fixed by song detection through music fingerprinting technology. Coming soon, or whenever we get some money.
You can, however, switch a private mix to public (provided that it meets the publishing criteria: 8 songs + no more than 2 songs by the same artist.)
Re: ugliness - I’ve gotten great feedback on the design and think it’s some of my best work to date, but if you have any suggestions on how to improve it I would love to hear them!
Muxtape was totally awesome, agreed. But, it was also pretty illegal by the laws as they stand today. (I don’t buy the EFF’s Youtube argument.) From what I hear the RIAA pulled a bait and switch and fucked them over.
FWIW I’m pretty goddamn cynical in general and especially about internet startups - especially ones that I’ve helped create. 8tracks is the only one which I think is doing things right, so you can be sure that I’ll take your comments seriously and try to get the team resolve any issues.
Gonna get some design tweaks and some cool new features/simplifications on the next push. Hang tight, Syd.

Yea I kinda agree re: the new facebook … it’s beautifully designed but it’s information overload.
Alright, I don’t like 8tracks, and I’m not going to post what mix I just uploaded. There are way too many problems with this site. Mixes get shuffled automatically, thereby destroying the careful order in which people put their songs. You aren’t allowed to delete the songs you upload, thereby creating tons of annoying duplicates and possibly mistagged songs. You can’t go switch a private mix into a public one. You can’t put multiple songs by the same artist. Oh, and it’s ugly.
What I loved about muxtape was that it was SIMPLE. KEEP IT SIMPLE, PEOPLE. Come on!
With this and the new facebook interface, I’m starting to become seriously irritated with networking sites that are just way too complicated, hard to navigate, and on top of it, a mess to look at.
Just because the sitemakers get bored and have nothing to do isn’t a good enough reason to embellish unnecessary things onto pages that people will never use. When you have well over a million people (exaggeration?) using your site, keeping them comfortable and NOT confused should take a high priority, and confusion occurs when you make drastic changes every few months.
